How to get more Google reviews

A simple, rule-following routine for local businesses — your review link, when to ask, what to say and how to reply.

The routine

Ask, make it easy, reply

Ask every happy customer at the right moment, make it one tap with your review link or a QR code, and reply to every review. Don't post fake reviews or offer rewards only for positive ones — that breaches Google's policies and can mislead consumers under Australian Consumer Law.

Step 1

Get your review link and QR code

From your Google Business Profile you can share a link to your review form (Google's steps). Turn it into a QR code for your counter, invoices or van.

Step 2

When and how to ask

  • Right after a job is finished or a great visit
  • In person first, then follow up with the link
  • Keep it short and neutral — ask for an honest review, not a five-star one
Step 3

Simple templates

  • SMS: "Thanks for choosing us today! If you have a minute, we'd really appreciate an honest Google review: [link]"
  • Email: "Thanks again for your business. Reviews help other locals find us — you can leave one here: [link]"
  • Counter card: "Enjoyed your visit? Scan to leave us a Google review."
Step 4

Replying to reviews

Thank every reviewer. For a bad review, stay calm, acknowledge it and offer to fix it offline. Never argue in public.

Not allowed

What to avoid

  • Fake reviews, including from staff, friends or family
  • Rewards only for positive reviews, or incentives that aren't disclosed (ACCC guidance)
  • Incentivised reviews on Google (Google policy)
  • Only asking customers you think are happy ('review gating')
Why it matters

Reviews and local SEO

Reviews help customers choose you and are part of how you show up in local search. See local SEO and marketing for tradies.

Questions

Common questions about Google reviews.

How do I get a link for Google reviews?

Open your Google Business Profile while signed in and look for the option to ask for reviews or share your review form. Google's help page explains the steps.

Can I offer a discount for a review?

Be very careful. The ACCC says incentives must be offered whether the review is positive or negative and must be clearly disclosed, and Google's policies prohibit incentivised reviews. The safest approach is simply to ask.

Should I reply to bad reviews?

Yes. Reply calmly and politely, thank them, acknowledge the issue and offer to sort it out offline. Other customers read your replies.

Do reviews help my Google ranking?

Google lists reviews as one of the factors in local search results, so a steady flow of genuine reviews and replies can help — alongside a complete Business Profile.
